We interviewed Melissa to get to know her a little better:

About the process & inspiration

What inspired you to create this collection?

This collection was inspired by nature and history. The artworks were made to feel timeless, a bit nostalgic but also modern. The design is meant to create a sense of calm and rest in your rooms. The motifs reflect the beautiful vegetation that winds along mountain slopes and treasures found at antique markets.

How would you describe your creative process when designing wallpapers?

My collections and patterns often originate from a memory or a source of inspiration. I start by sketching out ideas and then move on to painting or developing the sketches with ink. I then digitize the motifs to create a seamless pattern. Here, I play with color and create several iterations of the design. Seeing the idea take shape is something truly special.

Do you work mostly digitally, traditionally, or a combination of both?

I primarily work traditionally with watercolor and pencil but also enjoy working digitally to transform the pieces into seamless patterns.

Do you have a particular place, time, or routine you return to?

I’ve set up a small table by a window where natural light flows in. This place calls me to create after the children have gone to school. Having the materials visible makes it easier to seize the moment and create more often. I also enjoy painting outdoors while the children play.

About style & expression

How was it working with Wallpassion? What was the most enjoyable or challenging part?

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the team at Wallpassion. Communication has always been quick and friendly. Linda was incredibly helpful when we faced challenges and a true delight to collaborate with.

What do you want people to feel when they see your wallpapers?

I hope the designs feel welcoming and soothing. They’re meant to feel like an heirloom – a piece of history – but with a modern perspective.

What does it mean to you to see your designs on someone else’s walls?

Seeing my artwork in beloved homes is a dream come true. Our homes reflect who we are, so it’s a great joy and honor that my art becomes part of someone’s life.

Do you have a favorite pattern in the collection – and if so, which one and why?

Aunt D and Rosalind both hold great meaning in my life and journey as an artist. Aunt D is bold but has a subtle beauty. She was inspired by my aunt who lives in the Smoky Mountains. Rosalind is a tribute to my love for vintage and antique finds – like worn wood and lace. Each design tells a story, and I hope these patterns feel like keepsakes as you create your own.
