At Linda’s Home

Tired of white walls? Follow Linda’s journey from white to warm and get practical tips on how color creates a personal and cozy home.

“We painted over all the white, and suddenly the house felt alive”

Tired of white walls? Daring to use color doesn’t have to mean turning your home into a circus. In a 1930s house in Täby, pink floors, green walls, and painted woodwork meet in a calm, harmonious whole. Here, white has made way for personality and warmth.

From white to warm

When Linda and her family moved into their villa twelve years ago, the walls were white, the floors were covered with plastic matting, and the bathrooms were pink and brown. Today, every room is filled with color, from a pink wooden floor to green walls and painted woodwork.
The transformation began when the family extended the house a few years ago. It marked the starting point of a total change, where white gave way to colored surfaces in soft, muted tones.
Under the plastic mats were old plank floors that were sanded and painted, and in the new part of the house the family laid the same type of flooring – also painted. Today, they run like a warm thread through the entire house, tying the old and the new together.

Color as a feeling

Previously, Linda and her husband had stuck to white and played it safe. But this time they wanted to create a home with warmth and character.
– I’ve always thought it feels so cozy in other people’s homes when they dare to use color, but we never really did it ourselves, she says.
The hallway is in a muted green tone, the bedroom in a darker version, and in one of the children’s rooms both the door and the floor are painted pink. It sounds bold, but the result is surprisingly harmonious.

Inspired by older houses

The inspiration partly came from older houses where everything is painted in the same shade.
– We were at a wedding at an old manor where the rooms were done in dark green and everything was painted. It really stayed with me. That feeling is what I wanted to bring home, Linda says.
The project has grown step by step. Since her husband is a carpenter, they have done everything themselves, room by room. The bedroom is Linda’s favorite room.
– The combination of the dark green color against the beige-brown floor turned out so well. It became just as calm and peaceful as I had hoped. It’s truly a room to settle into.

Painting with a sense of wholeness

For those who are thinking about daring a bit more at home, she advises starting on a small scale.
One door, one molding, or one table is enough to see how color can change a room. And once you begin, it’s easy to continue.
The entire house is painted with color from Familjetapeter, in shades that tie the rooms together into a warm and personal whole. Linda also recommends the company’s self-adhesive, hand-painted sample sheets that can be moved around the room to see how the color changes in different light – a great way to find the right color before making a decision. They are available for purchase in ready-made color palettes so that you can easily see which shade suits you best.

Linda’s best color tips

  1. Start with the room
Feel free to get inspired and use Pinterest! But keep in mind that a color looks different depending on the light and the direction your room faces.

  2. Paint everything
Moldings, door frames, and woodwork in the same shade as the walls create a calm and more unified impression. We also chose to let the color of the floors extend up onto the doors in every room.

  3. Dare more than you think
Colors make rooms feel cozy, and muted, soft tones rarely feel loud. If you regret it, you can always just paint again!
